A WordPress plugin update broke my website — what now?

Plugin updates breaking WordPress sites is one of the most common problems small business owners face. One minute your site is fine, the next it’s showing a white screen or throwing error messages. Here’s how to handle it — and why it shouldn’t be your problem to deal with in the first place.

Why do plugin updates cause problems?

WordPress runs on a combination of its core software, your theme and your plugins. When a plugin developer releases an update, it occasionally conflicts with something else on your site — another plugin, your theme or the version of PHP your server is running.

It’s not always someone’s fault. Compatibility issues happen, especially on sites that haven’t been kept up to date consistently.

What to do right now

If you can access your WordPress dashboard

  1. Go to **Plugins → Installed Plugins**
  2. Look for the plugin that was most recently updated
  3. Deactivate it
  4. Check if your site comes back

If it does, you’ve found the culprit. Don’t reactivate it until there’s a fix from the developer, or until someone has tested it properly.

If you can’t access your dashboard

A white screen or critical error often locks you out of WordPress completely. In that case:

  • Contact your care package provider immediately — they have server-level access to deactivate plugins without needing to go through the dashboard
  • If you manage your own hosting, you can deactivate plugins via FTP by renaming the plugin folder in `wp-content/plugins/`

If deactivating doesn’t fix it

Some updates cause deeper damage — particularly if they’ve modified your database or conflicted with your theme. In that case, restoring from a recent backup is the cleanest and fastest solution.

Why this is exactly what a care package is for

Dealing with a broken site caused by a plugin update is stressful, time-consuming and technical. Most small business owners don’t have the knowledge or access to fix it quickly themselves.

A WordPress care package means:

  • Plugin updates are managed carefully, not just applied blindly
  • You have someone to call the moment something goes wrong
  • Recent backups mean problems can be resolved quickly
  • You’re not losing hours of your working day trying to fix a technical problem

The question to ask yourself is: what does an hour of your time cost? And how many hours could a broken site cost you — in your own time, in lost customers, in damage to your reputation?

How to prevent it happening again

You can’t eliminate the risk entirely, but you can reduce it significantly:

  • Never apply plugin updates without a recent backup in place
  • Update plugins one at a time rather than all at once, so you can identify the culprit if something breaks
  • Use a staging environment to test updates before applying them to your live site — this is something we handle as part of our higher-tier care packages
  • Remove plugins you’re not actively using — every inactive plugin is a potential vulnerability

The honest answer

Plugin conflicts are a fact of life with WordPress. The difference between a minor inconvenience and a major crisis usually comes down to one thing: whether you have someone looking after your site properly.

If you’re currently managing plugin updates yourself, or relying on your hosting provider to do it, and you’ve had a bad experience like this — it might be worth looking at what a proper WordPress care package actually covers.
